The fifth Congress of the Partito Rifoundazione Comunista, in Rimini in April this year, sees the party embark on a further phase of its re-foundation process.
After the events of Seattle and Genoa, Rifondazione is seeking to open itself up further to society, "by respecting the skills of others and being open to their movements, their experiences and their critical abilities". In grasping such innovations, Rifondazione, a party which in the past was often represented in Italy "as over-centralised, exclusively masculine, closed to experimentation" and overly bureaucratic, is jumping off "the merry-go-round of the centre left" and making a party that is for and of the left, to work alongside the social movements contesting neo-liberal globalisation, and to overcome capitalist society.
