Socialist Renewal - fifth series: 5

Lost, Stolen or Strayed?Lost, Stolen or Strayed? Gordon Brown as Socilaist Pretender.

Arguments from the Red Paper

Recalled by Socialist Renewal

and updated by Michael Meacher

For the young Scots who are demonstrating against Trident, and mobilising for independent policies, it will be surprising that Gordon Brown was thought to have a reputation which was at times subversive, not only in favour of nuclear disarmament, but also ardently supporting the underdog and trade unions in Britain.

In 1975 Gordon Brown edited and published The Red Paper on Scotland – The Socialist Challenge.  This was at one time required reading among the Scottish Left.   Today, Gordon Brown might usefully be reminded of his youthful thoughts as his position since then has changed considerably.
